Listening with Monte de la Sibille

Project type

Ecosomatic Performance / Video

Date

June 2024

Location

Monte de la Sibille, Umbria, Italy

Attending an artist residency in Monte Castello de Vibio, Umbria, at the International Center for the Arts, led by Heather Lyon and David Voros, we climbed Monte de la Sibille. There was a cave at the top where the Sybil lived. It was a hard climb, for me, I needed to rest before the final ascent to the summit, to the cave. I sat on a rock outcropping and caught my breath. Siting there alone, I came to understand how important it is to be alone to listen for the voice of the place, the voice of the "Sybils Throne" and the "more than humans" coming through. I digested my disappointment, into joy when I realized I was not going to climb any higher, that I needed instead to just stay here, alone and slow, and listen. I practiced, I wrote, I napped, I became filled with vigor once again. It was HOT, I had drunk all my water, I had to set up a makeshift tent of this blue cloth to shield myself from the unrelenting sun. The wind picked up, the clouds moved in, I set up my camera, and improvised this playful listening movement with my hiking sticks, with the blue cloth, with the wind, with the spirit of the Sybil, with the mountain, with the more than humans, the grasses and flowers, many birds, butterflies and moths. Many thanks to Misael Soto for the footage at the beginning of this clip.
